Frequently asked questions.
General Questions
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Dyson Contracting carries full general liability insurance ($2 million) and WSIB coverage. This protects both you and our team and ensures we meet the requirements for working on residential properties throughout Ontario.
Do you use your own crew or subcontractors?
Our team handles most work in-house. For specialized trades like HVAC or electrical, we bring in subcontractors we trust. We oversee every part of the process to maintain quality and consistency.
What kind of projects do you take on?
We focus on residential and small commercial renovations in the Huntsville area, including kitchens, bathrooms, carpentry, and full home & cottage upgrades. Whether you’re modernizing a bathroom or reimagining your entire main floor, we bring thoughtful design and precision craftsmanship to every job.
How long will my project take?
Timelines depend on the scope, but most bathroom or kitchen renovations take between 3–6 weeks from demolition to completion. Larger or more complex projects may take longer. We’ll always provide a realistic timeline before work begins—and keep you informed every step of the way.
Who do I communicate with during the project?
You’ll have a single point of contact—usually Wes or a dedicated project manager—who handles all scheduling, communication, and coordination. We make it easy to ask questions, get updates, and stay in the loop throughout the renovation.
How does billing work?
Each estimate and final invoice includes a detailed scope of work and notes, including finishing selections, so you and your contractor are always on the same page. To proceed with an estimate, sign the attached contract and send us your 50% deposit (unless stated otherwise in the contract).
Do you take care of permits and inspections?
We handle all the necessary permitting and coordinate with inspectors when needed. You don’t need to worry about paperwork—we’ve got it covered.
Estimate Questions
Why are you introducing a fee for in-person estimates?
In-depth estimates—like kitchen or bath renovations—now require travel, detailed measurements, and coordination with suppliers and trades. Charging a site-visit fee helps us invest the time needed to prepare an accurate, thoughtful quote and reduce guesswork later. It also helps us prioritize serious clients.
What’s the difference between a “free ballpark estimate” and a paid “site-visit estimate”? A:
Free ballpark estimate: A rough cost range based on your description and typical project scope—quick and no in-person inspection needed.
Paid site-visit estimate: A highly detailed estimate, based on on-site evaluation, material pricing, subs, permits, and labour. It takes hours (sometimes days) to prepare.
How do your estimate fees compare to industry norms?
Most contractors offering detailed, site‑based estimates charge fees anywhere from about $150 to over $700—depending on project complexity and travel distance. Our fee structure of $100 (within Huntsville) or $250 (outside) with credit toward the project—and the option of free ballpark quotes—is very competitive.
What types of projects does this apply to?
Site visit fees apply to more involved projects like bathroom and kitchen renovations, built-ins, and any work where we need to physically inspect the space to provide an accurate quote.
Do I still have to pay if I hire Dyson Contracting for the job?
No—if you proceed with the project, the estimate fee will be applied as a deposit toward your final invoice. That means it’s not extra—it’s just an upfront commitment to transparent pricing.
What if I just want a rough idea of price?
We’re happy to provide free ballpark estimates by phone or email for smaller projects that don’t require a site visit.
Do I need to sign anything before a site visit?
Yes. To ensure clarity and fairness, we’ll send you a site visit invoice and agreement to sign and pay before arrival that outlines the scope, fee, cancellation policy, and timeline. We’ll confirm everything up front—no surprises.
What if I decide not to proceed after the estimate?
That’s no problem. You’re not obligated to move forward, and your estimate fee is not refundable—but if you return to the project later with us, we’ll gladly honor it for up to 6 months.
Why charge for estimates instead of building it into higher project pricing?
You’ll often see contractors offering “free estimates” but building the cost into overall pricing—leading to less transparency for clients. Charging a separate, upfront fee avoids hidden markups and helps ensure pricing stays fair and straightforward.
How do I schedule a site visit or get an estimate?
