What areas do you serve?

Dyson Contracting serves North Bay, Ontario and communities within roughly a 20 minute drive. That includes North Bay itself (covering the West Ferris, Widdifield, and Airport Hill areas), Callander, Corbeil, Astorville, Powassan, and the Lake Nosbonsing area. South River, Sturgeon Falls, and Redbridge are outside our service area, as is the Muskoka region. We are also unable to service island properties. Did Dyson Contracting move from Huntsville to North Bay?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Dyson Contracting operated out of Huntsville, Ontario from 2018 until 2026 and served the Muskoka region during that time. In 2026 the company relocated to North Bay and now serves North Bay and the surrounding Nipissing District. We no longer take on work in Muskoka. If you found us listed as a Huntsville or Muskoka contractor, that listing is out of date.

Do you renovate cottages or seasonal properties?

Yes. Cottage and seasonal property renovations are a regular part of what we do, particularly around Lake Nosbonsing, Callander Bay, Trout Lake, and the Lake Nipissing shoreline. A building that sits unheated through a northern Ontario winter needs different choices than a year-round home, so we select decoupling membranes, flexible grouts, and drainable plumbing layouts accordingly. We can also work around seasonal access and water shutdown schedules. Please note that we are unable to service island properties.

We specialize in kitchen renovations (including RTA and custom cabinetry, countertops in quartz, laminate, and granite), bathroom remodels, shower systems, tile work (backsplashes, flooring, feature walls), flooring installation, painting and trim work, drywall finishing, interior door installation, textured ceiling (popcorn) removal, cabinet refinishing, custom built-ins, basement finishing, and interior design services. We handle projects of all sizes, from focused refreshes to full gut renovations, for residential and small commercial clients.

Do you handle permits?

Yes. We apply for all necessary permits directly and work with the local building department so the project meets Ontario Building Code requirements. The issuing authority depends on where you are: City of North Bay Building Services for North Bay and the Ferris area, the Municipality of Callander for Callander, the Municipality of East Ferris for Corbeil and Astorville, and the Municipality of Powassan for Powassan. You won't need to navigate the permit process on your own.

When do I actually need a building permit?

A building permit is generally required for structural changes, moving or adding plumbing, altering a load-bearing wall, finishing a basement, and most additions. Cosmetic work such as painting, flooring, replacing cabinets in the same layout, and swapping fixtures generally does not require one. We confirm what your specific project needs during the estimate rather than discovering it partway through the work.

On-site estimate fees may apply: $100 within North Bay city limits, and $200 outside of North Bay city limits. This fee is fully credited toward your project if you proceed with Dyson Contracting. Kitchen design fees may also apply and will be discussed upfront.

How far in advance should I book?

For larger renovations, booking 2 to 3 months in advance is ideal. We work through the winter rather than shutting down seasonally, so winter and early spring often have better availability and shorter lead times than the summer months. We do occasionally have last-minute openings from schedule changes and can sometimes accommodate projects with as little as a week's notice, so it's always worth reaching out even if your timeline is tight.

A general sense of what you'd like to accomplish, any inspiration photos, and a rough budget range all help us provide the most accurate estimate. That said, don't worry if you're unsure. We're happy to guide you through the options and help you figure out what's possible within your budget.

How does billing and payment work?

Accepted Answer

A 50% deposit (including HST) is due at estimate signing to secure your spot on our schedule. The remaining balance is due upon project completion. We accept e-transfer and cheque. Credit card payments are accepted with a signed pre-authorization form; please note that credit card processing fees are passed on to the client. Late payments are subject to 2% per month after 30 days.

Do you offer financing?

We don't offer in-house financing directly, but we're happy to discuss phased project approaches that work within your budget. Many clients also use home equity lines of credit or renovation financing programs available through their bank.

What happens if unexpected issues come up mid-project?

Accepted Answer

In renovation work, surprises do happen: hidden water damage, rot, outdated wiring, or structural issues behind walls. Remediation work (such as rot repair or water damage remediation) is always treated as an additional cost and will result in a Change Order before any extra work begins. When we encounter something unexpected, we stop, document it, walk you through what we found, and present your options. In cases where unexpected work must be completed before scheduled work can continue, a Change Order is created for that additional scope. If a Change Order is refused, the project is considered terminated by the client and a final bill is prepared that includes the value of work completed to that point, plus any materials already purchased. You are never on the hook for surprise charges without your approval.

What is your typical project timeline?

Timelines vary by scope. A standard shower remodel typically takes 1–2 weeks. A full bathroom renovation runs 2–4 weeks. A full kitchen renovation may take 4–8 weeks depending on cabinetry lead times and complexity. We provide a detailed timeline in your estimate and keep you updated throughout.

Do you provide material and product recommendations?

Yes, and it's one of the things our clients appreciate most. We work with premium suppliers including Caesarstone, Cosentino, and Cambria for countertops, multiple cabinet manufacturers for both RTA and custom cabinetry, Benjamin Moore for paints, and Moen and Delta for fixtures. We'll help you find the right products for your style and budget.

Can I supply my own materials?

In some cases, yes. We're happy to discuss this during your consultation. Keep in mind that materials sourced through our supplier partners often come with better pricing, warranty coverage, and guaranteed compatibility with your project specs.

Our process has five stages: (1) Consultation: we visit your space, discuss your vision, and learn your budget. (2) Estimate: we prepare a detailed written scope and estimate. (3) Design & Selection: we help you select materials, finishes, and fixtures. (4) Build: our team executes the work with daily site cleanup. (5) Completion: we do a final walkthrough with you to make sure everything is exactly right before we consider the job done.

Can I live in my home during the renovation?

For smaller projects like a single bathroom, flooring, or painting, absolutely. For larger renovations like a full kitchen gut, it depends on the scope. We'll discuss what to expect during your consultation so you can plan accordingly. We always leave the worksite clean and safe at the end of each day.

Do you handle the full project, or do you subcontract?

We self-perform most of our work with our own team. When specialists are needed, such as licensed electricians or plumbers, we work with trusted, vetted trades we've partnered with for years. You'll always know who is on your site.

How do you handle site cleanliness during the project?

We treat your home with respect. The worksite is left clean and safe at the end of every workday. We use protective coverings on floors and surfaces outside the work area, and do a thorough final cleanup before project handoff.

You'll have direct contact with your project lead throughout the build. We provide regular updates on progress, flag any decisions that need your input promptly, and are always reachable by text or email. No chasing us down for updates.

Changes happen, and we understand. We handle scope changes by documenting what's changing, the cost and timeline impact in the form of a Change Order before proceeding. No surprises.
