Why Dyson Contracting Isn't on HomeStars - And Why That's Better for You

By Wes Dyson

You might notice that Dyson Contracting Inc. isn't listed on HomeStars. That's not an oversight - it's a deliberate choice, and one we made with you in mind.

We believe in being upfront with our clients, so here's the full story on why we stay off HomeStars and why you should think twice before using it to find your next contractor.

What HomeStars Actually Is

HomeStars markets itself as an independent review platform that helps homeowners find trusted contractors. On the surface, that sounds great. But here's what's really going on behind the curtain: HomeStars is a paid lead-generation service. Contractors pay monthly fees - often hundreds of dollars - for the privilege of being listed, and those who pay more get better visibility and higher rankings.

That means the contractors you see at the top of HomeStars aren't necessarily the best. They're the ones spending the most on marketing through the platform.

The Dark Patterns

HomeStars uses a number of tactics that should concern both homeowners and contractors.

Pay-to-Play Rankings

Contractor scores and visibility on HomeStars are heavily influenced by how much they pay. A contractor with exceptional craftsmanship and happy clients can be buried below one who simply writes a bigger cheque each month. The "Star Score" system isn't a measure of quality - it's a measure of ad spend.

The Lead Flood

When you post a job on HomeStars, your request doesn't go to one or two carefully matched contractors. It gets blasted out to dozens. Contractors report seeing 15 to 25 competitors fighting over the same lead within minutes. That's not a curated experience - it's a bidding war, and you're the product being sold.

Manufactured Urgency

The platform is designed to push you toward quick decisions. You're nudged to "select 10 contractors" and respond fast. This pressure benefits HomeStars - more engagement, more leads sold - but it doesn't help you make a thoughtful decision about who's going to work on your home.

Review Manipulation

Reviews on HomeStars are not as independent as they appear. Contractors who pay more get access to "account managers" who can help manage their review profiles. Positive reviews from non-paying contractors have been removed or suppressed. Meanwhile, competitors can leave damaging fake reviews, and the moderation is inconsistent at best.

A CBC investigation covered the case of a contractor who carried an A+ rating and glowing reviews on HomeStars - despite allegedly leaving multiple projects unfinished, with clients out hundreds of thousands of dollars. The reviews looked great. The reality didn't.

Contract Lock-In

Contractors who sign up for HomeStars are typically locked into year-long contracts. Cancelling early comes with steep penalties - sometimes 30% or more of the remaining balance. Many contractors have reported being unable to reach anyone at HomeStars when trying to cancel, while payments continue to be withdrawn from their accounts.

HomeStars is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has failed to respond to dozens of formal complaints.

Who Really Pays for HomeStars? You Do.

Here's something most homeowners don't think about: when a contractor is paying hundreds - sometimes thousands - of dollars a month to HomeStars for leads, that cost doesn't just evaporate. It becomes overhead. And overhead gets built into the price of your project.

When you hire a contractor through HomeStars, you're indirectly paying for their listing fees, their lead costs, and the time they spend chasing dead leads and competing with dozens of other contractors for your attention.

When you call us directly, that overhead doesn't exist. No lead fees, no platform commissions, no middleman markup. Just the actual cost of quality work.

A Better Way to Find Your Contractor

Skip the platform and go direct. Here's how:

  • Ask your neighbours. In Huntsville and the surrounding area, reputation travels fast. The best contractors are the ones your neighbours, friends, and family already know and trust.
  • Check Google Reviews. Google doesn't charge contractors for listings. The reviews are from real customers, and they're much harder to game than a paid platform.
  • Call us directly. Pick up the phone or send us an email. We'll give you an honest answer about whether we're the right fit for your project - and if we're not, we'll tell you that too.
  • Look for transparency. A good contractor will show you past work, answer your questions openly, and provide clear, written estimates. You don't need a platform to verify that - a conversation will tell you everything you need to know.
  • Why We Choose to Stay Off HomeStars

We'd rather earn your business through the quality of our work and the strength of our reputation in the community - not by paying a platform to put our name in front of yours.

Every dollar we don't spend on lead-generation services is a dollar that stays in the value we deliver to you: better materials, more attention to detail, and fair pricing without hidden platform costs baked in.

If you've got a project in mind, we'd love to hear from you directly.
