New Service: Textured (Popcorn) Ceiling Removal

Dyson Contracting offers a variety of drywall finishing services, including the removal of textured (popcorn) ceilings.

Textured ceilings were very popular in the 80’s and 90’s as a cost-effective alternative to smooth Level 3 finishes. In 2025 though, they’re considered outdated. Whether you’re listing your house or simply looking to refresh your home, refinishing textured ceilings can make a significant impact. It modernizes the space without a large investment.

The process is straightforward:

  • Remove the textured plaster from the drywall

  • Sand the surface smooth

  • Finish the ceiling as if it were new drywall

  • Prime and paint the ceiling, typically using a flat white from Benjamin Moore

Important to note: If the textured ceiling has been painted, the process becomes more intensive. We use water to loosen the plaster texture, but paint acts as a barrier, preventing moisture from reaching the plaster. In such cases, more labour-intensive methods are required — but the job can still be done.

We also recommend painting the walls in rooms where popcorn ceilings are removed, to complete the transformation.
